Scioto County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the Kroger in Wheelersburg after a caller reported hearing what sounded like rapid gunfire outside the store.
Within a minute, a second call came in reporting the same thing.
As deputies began investigating, one reported hearing additional shots coming from the direction of Ainsley Avenue, raising further concern about what might be happening in the area.
Several bystanders also told deputies they heard what they believed were dozens of shots, describing the sound as rapid and coming in bursts.
Deputies searched the area but did not locate any suspects, victims, or evidence connected to the reports.
What exactly caused the sounds remains unclear.
