What started as reports of a reckless pickup nearly hitting vehicles on U.S. Route 52 turned into one of the stranger roadside investigations deputies have handled lately.
By the end of the stop, authorities say deputies had:
- detained an intoxicated driver holding a knife
- discovered suspected psychedelic mushrooms and Xanax
- found drug paraphernalia on another man
- called in the Ohio State Highway Patrol for an OVI investigation
- sent one man to rehab through QRT
- and even had the dog warden rescue a stranded dog from the disabled truck.
According to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were alerted to a reckless driver complaint involving a red Ford pickup truck that had reportedly nearly struck multiple vehicles.
Dispatchers advised the truck had been driving westbound before making a U-turn through the median and heading back eastbound.
When deputies arrived near the 19-mile marker, they found the red Ford F-150 partially parked in the median.
Two men were at the vehicle.
Deputies say one of them appeared heavily intoxicated almost immediately.
According to the report, the man:
- staggered while standing
- struggled to keep his balance
- had slurred speech
- and repeatedly insisted there was a woman inside the truck even though only two men were present
Things escalated when deputies attempted to detain him.
According to investigators, the man kept his hands in his pockets and resisted while deputies attempted to handcuff him.
When officers finally pulled his hands free, they discovered he was holding a pocketknife.
During a pat-down, deputies reportedly found:
- suspected psilocybin mushrooms
- and a green rectangular pill later identified as Alprazolam, commonly known as Xanax
Authorities say the mushrooms weighed approximately 2.4 grams.
Bubble Pipe, Rehab and a Dog Rescue
Meanwhile, deputies say the second man at the scene was found carrying a bubble pipe commonly associated with drug use.
Rather than being arrested immediately, investigators say the man expressed interest in treatment.
That’s when the county’s Quick Response Team — commonly called QRT — was contacted.
According to the report, QRT later transported the man directly to a rehabilitation facility.
Because the suspected driver was too impaired for roadside sobriety testing, the Ohio State Highway Patrol handled the OVI investigation and transported him for further testing.
Deputies also discovered another unexpected problem:
a dog trapped inside the disabled pickup truck.
The dog warden was called to the scene and took custody of the animal while the truck was towed away.
A Dangerous Reminder About Impaired Driving
Law enforcement officials say impaired driving cases increasingly involve more than alcohol.
Deputies now routinely encounter drivers allegedly impaired by:
- prescription medications
- narcotics
- hallucinogens
- combinations of substances
- or severe intoxication mixed with mental confusion
And in this case, investigators say the bizarre roadside encounter involved:
- reckless driving
- drugs
- a weapon
- a stranded dog
- and two very different outcomes for the men involved
with one heading to jail…
and the other heading to treatment.
