Report of Bomb Mailed to Otway Resident

Like the plot of a Bruce Willis movie, a resident on Darnell Road in Otway got the scare of a lifetime. Scioto County Sheriff’s Office received a disturbing call for assistance. It seemed someone had mailed a bomb to this individual.

According to the official report, obtained by SCDN, the victim opened the package and the white shipping paper to discover several explosive elements. Included in the inventory: 1-2, 1/2 lbs TNT high explosives,1 stick of dynamite, and 2 4oz blasting gelignite (caps).

The response was immediate and by the book. Multiple agencies were enlisted to secure the scene and the package containing the devices. The Ohio BCI Investigation Division took possession of the package and transported it to Columbus for examination. It was later determined that the devices were not only inert but fake. They were not obvious dummy devices and appeared completely genuine. The fear and terror of the victim and those involved were also completely genuine.

According to additional sources, the package had a return address of a bogus home in South Carolina.

Not a Joke to Law Enforcement

We reached out to Scioto County Prosecutor, Shane Tieman about this situation. Of course, he can’t make statements directly about this case. He did, however, have a message for anyone who may think of trying an ill-advised stunt like this. Tieman stated, ” Possession of even hoax weapons or their use to cause public panic are treated very seriously and subject the person responsible to fines, prison, and loss of various rights.”

He added. ” The Ohio Revised Code has a number of different crimes on the books that could potentially apply, depending on the circumstances.”

Tieman ended his comments with, “Federal laws are even, in some cases more stringent. I would stress to the public that even if it was just meant as a joke, that it would not be treated that way by law enforcement. These matters are taken seriously and expose the person responsible to serious consequences.”
