Reverend Lynn “Mick” Mitchell Wellman, 76, of Franklin Furnace, passed away at home on November 12, 2023. Lynn was born December 12, 1946, to the late Lynn Boyd and Pearl Jordan Wellman.
He is preceded in death by his first wife Lavonda and their children, Robert Edward, Serena Sue, Shad Robert Wellman, brothers, Jimmy, Adrian, and Ronnie.
He is survived by his devoted, loving wife of 41 years, Mary Hopkins Wellman. They were married in Bryson City, NC on December 19, 1981. Lynn and Mary have two daughters, Michelle (Matthew) Sheets of Holly Springs, NC, and Danielle (Jacob) Somerville of Sandyville, WV. He is survived by the best granddaughter in the world, Madison Sheets of Holly Springs, NC. He is also survived by his brothers, Don (Glenna) Wellman and Woodrow (Judy) Jordan both of West Portsmouth, OH, and a sister, Wilma Jean (Michael) Messer of Scottsville, KY, and a son, Kevin Wellman.
Lynn graduated from Portsmouth West High School in 1966. He served in the Army 1st Calvary Division. He was wounded on the first day of the Tet Offensive on January 31, 1968, in Quang Tri, Vietnam. He was awarded a Purple Heart for his service and sacrifice. Lynn retired from the Boilermakers Local 105. He was the pastor for 40 years at Jericho Baptist Church in West Portsmouth, Ohio. He was a strong and devout Christian never wavering in His faith in God. Lynn was a proud member of the Purple Heart Chapter 671 where he served as the Adjutant /Chaplin. He also served as a Junior Commander /Adjutant of the DAV Peerless 10. He was also a member of the James Dickey American Legion Post 23 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth with Frances Wiley Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Haverhill Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites by the James Dickey Post 23 American Legion. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday starting at 11:00 AM.
