Robert Leroy Eggar, 69, of Portsmouth, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at the SOMC Hospice Center. He was born June 25, 1951 on Long Island, NY, a son of the late Melba June White John and Richard Leroy Eggar.
Bob was a retired financial counselor with Nationwide Insurance and an ordained pastor at The Rock Church. A Vietnam Navy veteran and James Dickey Post American Legion member, Bob was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, two Good Conduct medals and the Meritorious Mast. He graduated from Odessa (TX) High School and remained a proud Texan his entire life, even flying the state flag at his home.
The host of the “What God Says” radio program on the Coyote radio station until his health failed, he loved to teach God’s word. He taught classes at New Beginnings as well as led the Men’s Bible Study at The Rock Church. He loved to share his favorite verse from 1 Chronicles 4:10. “And Jabex called on the God of Israel saying, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So, God granted him what he requested.”
Surviving is his wife of 47 years, Michelle Ann “Micki” Estep Eggar, whom he married September 2, 1973 in Beaufort, SC; one son, Matthew Scott (Stephanie) Eggar of Rochester, NY; two daughters, Jennifer Michelle (Adam) Wolfe of Portsmouth and Sarah Jean (Dragon) Eggar Kosanovic of Amsterdam, Netherlands; a daughter-in-law, Marla Eggar of Scranton, PA; three brothers, Jack (Dona) Eggar of Avinger, TX, Bill (Nancy) Eggar of Aledo, TX and Tom (Kathy) Eggar of Melissa, TX; a sister, Debbie (David) Swan of Hughes Springs, TX; nine grandchildren, Avery Wolfe, Gavin Hartman, Neveah, Kyleigh, Maddison, Andrew, Renee, Alex and Gabi Eggar; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Mike & Debbie Estep of Wheelersburg and Rick & Laura Estep of Portsmouth; and many nieces, nephews and their families.
Bob was also preceded in death by a son, Ryan Robert Eggar; and his mother-in-law, Jean Evelyn Estep Hewitt.
Funeral services will be held at 1 P.M. Thursday at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Rick Clark, minister, officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the James Dickey Post #23 American Legion Honor Detail. There will be a Live Stream of the service beginning at 1 P.M. on the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Facebook page.
The family will receive friends from 11 A.M. until the funeral hour Thursday.
