Roy Eugene Payton Sr., 81, of Portsmouth, died Sunday, September 26, 2021, at his daughter’s home in Minford, with his family by his side.
He was born January 16, 1940, in Portsmouth, to the late Vernon and Elizabeth (Brown) Payton. He was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Roy was retired from the City of Portsmouth, Waterworks Division, where he read meters and retired as a Supervisor. On September 14, 2002, Roy was inducted into the Greater Southern Ohio Tri-State Sports Baseball and Softball Hall of Fame.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his seven siblings; Opal, Dorothy, Edith, Judith “Toby”, Bill, Paul, and Harry “Fuzz”.
Roy is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth (Brown) Payton, their children; David Payton, Roy Eugen Payton Jr., Becky Hannah (Mike), and Judy “Sis” Payton-Sherman (Perry), all of Minford, 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, September 30, 2021, at Melcher Hammer Funeral Home in Portsmouth. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Franklin Furnace where graveside burial rites will be provided by the American Legion, James Dickey Post #23.
A visitation for friends and family will be on Thursday, at the funeral home, from 11:00 A.M. until the time of service at 1:00 P.M.
