Portsmouth Police Officers were kept busy responding to some extremely unusual calls on Saturday. The incidents included accusations of death threats, stolen weapons, and some pretty inexplicable vandalism of a local business.
The weirdness started around 4:30 a.m. with a report of an incident at 11th and Offnere Streets. A witness contacted officers to report that a dope fiend was attempting to kill them.
The caller mentioned the overpass, the Sunoco gas station, and the fire department. Officers caught up with several individuals near the train tracks and detained one man with an open warrant from NBPD.
At 6 a.m., a Grandview Avenue caller said someone had stolen their gun. The man claimed two individuals had been playing cat and mouse with him all night and then snuck into his house while he was in the bathroom to steal his rifle.
When officers spoke to the man’s girlfriend, she said he had been high all night and thought people were knocking on second-story windows. Although she did say her grandmother’s rifle was missing.
Around noon, employees at the EZ stop reported that an irate customer flipped out and threw their change at a clerk before storming out. As no one was injured, officers saw no need for a report.
At 1:30 p.m., employees at Bar Benders said a man with his hair in dreadlocks put holes in the banners for their business and walked away. Police took information for a report.
At 5:30 p.m., officers responded to a report that two five-year-olds were panhandling at 17th and Thomas. The caller said they were stopping cars and asking for money. Police were unable to locate the children.
