Scam targets SNAP

The Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services is warning about a scam targeting people who receive SNAP benefits. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as food stamps, provides low-income Ohioans with assistance in purchasing food.

Scammers have used what’s called a ‘phishing’ scam to target some SNAP recipients. A phishing scam (pronounced just like ‘fishing’) tricks you into calling a number or clicking on a link by sending you a fraudulent notice that appears to be from a legitimate government agency, your bank, or some other account. In this case, consumers tricked into calling a fake customer service number. They’re then asked to provide a credit or debit number to pay for shipping fees for a new Ohio Direction/EBT card.

Others were also told that they’d won a prize and would need to provide personal information. ODJFS is making it clear that they never ask anyone to provide credit card information and they do not charge to replace missing cards. If you need any help with your SNAP benefits or a replacement card, call 1-866- 386-3071. You can also lookup the local number for your county by visiting jfs.ohio.gov/county
