Scioto County Sewer Rates Rise 3%

Sewer rates rise 3%

Scioto County sewer rates are going up once again. As of January 1, the rates will rise 3% over last year’s rates. If that sounds familiar, it’s because rates went up 3% at the beginning of 2019 as well. The rate increases affect everyone who is tapped into Scioto County’s sanitary sewer system.

Don’t expect this to be the end of the rate increases. County Commissioner Bryan Davis warned that yearly increases are in the cards for some time to come. But he’s not happy about it.

Davis said those increases reflect both maintenance costs and increased costs from other entities that the County does business with including the City of Portsmouth. Portsmouth is in the process of trying to replace its own aging sewer system and has passed some of their costs on to the county.

“We get an automatic 3% increase for the next several years.”

Davis didn’t hide his displeasure at having to continually raise the rates. “As you recall we had a lengthy fight about it.” He reconsidered his words and said, “Or shall we say debated. It’s not something we like to do. It’s something that’s necessary.”

Scioto County Sewer Rates are based on monthly water consumption. The 2020 rate will be 29.61 for the first 2,000 gallons used with an additional $9.90 for the next 1,000. There’s a 10% late fee on delinquent balances
