Scioto County Vaccination Locations: Plus, New Vaccine Available
The Food and Drug Administration’s Emergency Use Approval of Johnson and Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 vaccine means more vaccine doses will be available later this week throughout the country. Scioto County vaccine providers are prepared to get more shots in arms as the third COVID vaccine becomes available. Portsmouth City Health Department, Scioto County Health Department, and Southern Ohio Medical Center are all receiving Johnson and Johnson doses in addition to their allotments of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines.
The Johnson and Johnson vaccine requires only one dose and can be stored in regular refrigeration. In clinical trials, it was 100 percent effective in preventing hospitalization and death from COVID-19 when evaluated 28 days after vaccination.
Dr. David Byers, infectious disease specialist and Medical Director of Portsmouth City Health Department said, “the approval for using the Johnson and Johnson vaccine is an important step in getting COVID-19 under control. The end goal of all three vaccines is to prevent serious illness, hospitalization, and death from this virus. This vaccine, like the other two, is highly successful at accomplishing that.”
With the news of the new vaccine, a new phase of eligibility is beginning this week in Ohio. Phase 1c includes anyone with the following medical conditions; type 1 diabetes, ALS, bone marrow transplant recipients, or pregnancy. These occupations are also included in 1c: childcare workers, funeral home employees, and law enforcement and corrections officers. Phase 2 also begins this week and includes all individuals 60 years of age and over.
If you are eligible in any of these phases – 1a, 1b, 1c, and phase 2 – contact a local vaccine provider to schedule an appointment.
