Semi Truck Stolen, Then Suspect Walks Into Stranger’s Home During Police Search

A bizarre chain of events that began with a stolen semi-truck ended with an arrest—and an unexpected stop inside a stranger’s living room.

Deputies say the suspect not only stole a commercial tractor, but later wandered into an occupied home while officers were searching the area.

Police first became involved after a commercial semi-truck was reported driving away from a trucking company without permission.

Officers followed the truck’s tracks through Ironton before locating it abandoned on County Road 7C in the Coryville area.

According to the report, an officer encountered a man near the truck and asked if he had been driving it.

The man reportedly denied any involvement before leaving the area.

The truck’s owner was contacted to recover the vehicle, while investigators began searching for the suspect.

The investigation picked up steam the following day.

According to the report, the trucking company posted information about the theft on Facebook, leading to tips that helped identify the suspected driver.

Investigators also learned the suspect’s disabled car had been left near the trucking company before the theft.

License plate information led deputies to the suspect’s identity, and after following up on several leads, they located him at a residence in the Coryville area.

When deputies made contact, the suspect declined to answer questions after being advised of his rights.

He was arrested and transported to the Lawrence County Jail.

Company officials told investigators the suspect had never worked for the business and did not have permission to operate the truck.

According to the report, the stolen semi sustained significant damage to its trailer, tires, and braking system.

Investigators also learned the truck struck another company vehicle while being driven out of the trucking yard.

Security video and photographs provided by the company were collected as evidence.

Search Leads to Startling Discovery Next Door

While officers were searching the area for another suspect connected to an unrelated investigation, dispatch received another frantic call from a nearby home.

A woman told deputies she had been asleep on her couch when an unknown man suddenly walked into her unlocked house.

According to her statement, the man claimed someone had robbed him after he had “won big on the lottery.”

She said he repeatedly begged for help but she immediately ordered him to leave.

The woman told deputies the man appeared extremely nervous, continually looked out the windows, put on her son’s baseball cap in an apparent attempt to disguise himself, and later draped a winter coat over his shoulders.

He also reportedly made several phone calls asking someone to pick him up before calling police himself to report that he had been robbed.

When officers arrived at the residence, the man walked outside to meet them.

The homeowner told deputies she never invited him inside and had simply left her door unlocked before the unexpected encounter.

The investigations remain separate, but both incidents unfolded within the same area as law enforcement searched for suspects.

An Unlocked Door Can Invite More Than Friends

While most people never experience a stranger walking into their home, law enforcement says it happens more often than many realize—especially in rural communities where residents feel comfortable leaving doors unlocked.

Deputies encourage homeowners to lock doors whenever possible, even during the day, and to call 911 immediately if an unfamiliar person enters a residence without permission.
