In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Shawnee State University is canceling all in-person classes the week of March 16-20. The university says that many classes are already available online and they will have the rest of them ready for students to access remotely by Monday, March 23. Online classes will continue through Sunday, April 12.
All major events that involve large gatherings have been canceled or postponed. Areas like the Rec Center and the Aquatic Center are closed.
The University is still open and student housing will be open for students who live on campus. The Library, Health Clinic, Dining, Safety Services, and other services will be open their regular hours.
Three SSU students have been tested for COVID-I9 after showing respiratory symptoms. Test results for one of the students came back negative on Wednesday.
The move follows recommendations from Governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Health. The state fears that students returning to school from spring break could have been exposed to the virus. There are no current plans to cancel classes for K-12 schools but the Governor suggested that parents and teachers should prepare for the possibility.
