Shoplifters Run Wild at Walmart

A toolbox allegedly stuffed with hidden merchandise, 58 packages of Pokémon cards, and a tag-switching suspect who deputies say tried to make a run for it kept law enforcement busy during three separate Walmart theft calls. Lawrence County deputies responded to the South Point store for the unrelated incidents, with all three ending in arrests. Toolbox Had a Little Extra Inside In the first case, Asset Protection told deputies they had been watching a man on surveillance as he allegedly concealed merchandise around the store. And this one apparently took some preparation. According to the report, the man took a knife from the store and allegedly used it to open a package of headphones. He then put on the headphones, slipped the unpaid knife into his pocket and continued shopping. Asset Protection said he also selected a toolbox and began putting additional merchandise inside it. He allegedly zip-tied the toolbox shut, went through self-checkout and paid for the toolbox itself. What he allegedly didn't pay for was everything hidden inside it, along with the headphones he was wearing and the knife in his pocket. Asset Protection stopped him after he exited the store, and the merchandise was recovered. The man was arrested and transported to the Lawrence County Jail. The report did not identify him by name. 58 Packs of Pokémon Cards Another trip to Walmart ended at the juvenile center after Asset Protection accused a juvenile of trying to make off with a pretty impressive stack of Pokémon cards. According to the report, the teen selected 58 packages of Pokémon cards worth a total of $298.26, took them into an aisle and put them into an empty Walmart shopping bag. He then allegedly attempted to leave without paying. The juvenile's custodial parent was contacted and responded to the store. After speaking with the teen and collecting his belongings and vehicle, the parent left while the juvenile took a different ride. A deputy transported him to the Lawrence County Juvenile Center on a theft charge. Tag-Switching Suspect Allegedly Makes a Run for It The third incident began with another familiar self-checkout allegation: switching price tags. Asset Protection told deputies they watched a man switch tags on merchandise and conceal a knife inside a shirt before heading through self-checkout. Deputies waited until he finished checking out and passed all points of sale before stopping him. According to the report, Corey Scarlotti was told he was under arrest and initially began walking toward the Asset Protection office with a deputy. Then, deputies say, he tried to pull away and run. The deputy reported struggling with Scarlotti into the Asset Protection office before taking him to the ground. Another deputy was requested for assistance, and Scarlotti was eventually handcuffed. He was transported to the Lawrence County Jail, and the case was closed by arrest.
