Shots Fired at Loose Dogs

Two hurt in Rarden shooting

A West Portsmouth man contacted deputies at 11:41 a.m. to report that a neighbor shot at his dogs while they were running loose.

When officers asked if the dogs were on the neighbor’s property, the man refused to answer.

A deputy spoke to the neighbor who admitted firing a shot, but said he shot into the ground after one dog tore up his property and another tried to bite him. He said he was just trying to scare the animals.

Officers advised the dog owner to keep them at home and the neighbor not to fire shots into the ground.

Deputies assisted in another matter involving a dog later in the afternoon when a humane agent contacted them and said she’d been to a Green Avenue home with the Dog Warden to check on a dog, but no one would answer the door.

She said the dog was very skinny and appeared to be sick. Officers tried to contact the residents with no luck. The humane agent took possession of the dog and left a note on the door.

Just after 4 p.m., a Thompson Hill Road caller said his neighbor’s dogs got loose and killed his rabbits and injured his dogs. Officers attempted to contact the dog owners and also contacted animal control.
