Social Media Frenzy Over Video Leads to Child Welfare Check

A viral video circulating on social media led to a police investigation after it was alleged that a mother smoked marijuana in front of her infant. However, when officers arrived at the provided address, they found no baby at the residence.

What Police Found

The video in question reportedly showed a woman smoking marijuana, but no child was visible in the footage. While smoking marijuana in your home is legal in Ohio, being intoxicated while caring for a child could raise concerns with Child Protective Services (CPS).

Police checked with CPS and learned that the agency already had an open case involving both the mother and father of the child. CPS confirmed that they would add the new information to the case file as their investigation continues.

When Should You Report Child Neglect?

If you suspect a child is being neglected or endangered, the best course of action is to contact authorities directly rather than relying on social media to raise awareness. Here’s what you can do:
Call Child Protective Services – If you believe a child is in danger, contact your local CPS office or call 1-855-OH-CHILD (Ohio’s child abuse hotline).
Notify Police – If immediate danger is suspected, call 911.
Avoid Social Media Vigilantism – While it may seem like a quick way to raise awareness, publicly shaming someone online can complicate investigations and even put a child at greater risk.

Know the Law

While smoking marijuana at home is legal, authorities can intervene if drug use impacts a child’s safety. If you’re under the influence and responsible for a child’s care, CPS may get involved—just as they would in cases involving alcohol abuse.

This case remains under investigation.
