Stoned Mom Goes for Grub with Kids: PPD and CPS Say That’s Not the Way to be a MOM

From the Portsmouth Police Chief’s Daily Briefing

CPS Contacted After Domestic Incident

Police responded to a domestic dispute on Robinson Avenue at 9:24 pm and found kids present in the home.

They detained a man and contacted CPS. A caseworker said the agency would follow up the next day since the male half of the argument was going to jail. Police took him into custody.

Kids Left Home Alone

Just before 1 am, a Kent Street caller reported several children running around and said the parents were not home.

Officers went immediately to the scene and spoke to a 10 and 11-year-old girl. Police said the kids were inside and safe. The kids told police their parents were at Walmart and would be back soon.

CPS was called to the scene as well. Police took information for a report.

CPS Called To Aid Kids

Witnesses at the Oasis Convenient Mart reported an apparently high woman who had children with her just after 5 pm.

An officer took the woman and the kids to her home at the Woodbine apartments and contacted CPS who arrived shortly.

We spoke with Children’s Services Director Jason Mantell. One of the subjects discussed was the importance of a good working relationship with local law enforcement.

Director Mantell said the agency’s relationship with law enforcement is extremely important. “We live in a world and a county where adults sometimes make poor decisions. Sometimes those adults are supposed to be caring for children.”

Mantell says he’s been able to sit down with both Scioto County Sheriff David Thoroughman and Portsmouth Police Chief Debby Brewer. “Both have been wonderful. We have a good relationship with the New Boston Police which we can see from the back of our agency. We just want to make sure we are all on the same page.”
