Stranger Danger: Quick-Thinking Teen Seeks Help After Suspicious Car Follows Her

Feel Good News

A frightened 19-year-old knew exactly where to turn when she suspected someone was following her—straight to the Portsmouth Fire Department for help.

The young woman entered the Gallia Street fire station lobby, visibly shaken, and told firefighters that a gray car had been trailing her, making her too scared to walk home alone.

Portsmouth Police were immediately called, and an officer arrived to assist. After checking the area and seeing no sign of the suspect vehicle, the officer personally drove the young woman home to ensure she arrived safely.

Don’t go home. Instead, head for a public place, such as a store, fire station, police department, or any well-lit area with people around.

Call 911. Give as many details as possible about the suspect, their vehicle, and your location.

Change your route. Take unexpected turns, cross the street, or enter a business to see if the person continues to follow.

Stay aware. If you’re in a car and believe someone is tailing you, don’t drive home. Instead, head to a police station or a crowded public area.

Trust your instincts. If something feels off, don’t ignore it—seek help immediately, just like this quick-thinking teen did.

Thanks to her smart decision-making and the swift response of first responders, this story had a safe ending.
