Stranger Walks Into Middle School

An unexpected visitor caused concern at a local middle school Tuesday morning when an unidentified man walked into the school office, began rambling about drug rehab and “dirty cops,” and asked employees for a woman they apparently did not know him to have any connection with. The incident happened around 8:15 a.m. at Ironton Middle School, according to a report from the school resource officer. School employees said the man entered the office and was acting erratically while talking about drug rehabilitation, police officers and asking for a woman by name. By the time the school resource officer was notified and reached the front of the building, the man had already left. Witnesses said he walked toward the end of Thomas Street and disappeared from view. The officer obtained a description and contacted the Ironton Police Department for help finding him. An Ironton police captain located a man matching the description nearby and sent a photograph to the school resource officer. A school secretary confirmed that he was the same man who had entered the office. Police identified the man, and the school resource officer requested that he be formally trespassed from school property. The Ironton officer advised that the trespass warning had been issued and documented with dispatch. No arrest was reported, and the school resource officer said there had been no additional incidents involving the man at the time the report was completed. How Did an Unknown Adult Get Into the School Office? Nothing in the report indicates that the man threatened a student or staff member or was carrying a weapon. Police were also able to locate him quickly after he left. But the incident does raise an obvious school-safety question: How was an unidentified adult able to enter the middle school office before school officials knew who he was or why he was there? Modern school security often relies on keeping exterior doors locked and routing visitors through a controlled entrance where staff can identify them and determine the reason for their visit before they are given further access to the building. An office can itself serve as that controlled point of entry, depending on the school's design. However, the report does not explain whether the man had to be buzzed into the building, whether he entered through an unlocked door, whether staff attempted to determine his identity before allowing him inside, or how far into the building he was able to travel. Those details matter, especially when an unfamiliar person is behaving erratically. In this case, employees alerted the school resource officer, police located the man and he was formally warned to stay off school property. Fortunately, the encounter ended without anyone being hurt.
