All a child’s firsts are exciting, but they’re even more special if it’s a hobby that runs in the family. Check out our tips for taking your grandkids on their first fishing trip to ensure that everyone has a great time, whether the fish are biting or not!
Do a Dry Run
Casting lines is tricky for a kid, so let them try their hand in a low-stakes situation first. This will help them feel comfortable when they reach the pond. Teach them how their fishing pole works in the yard and let them cast the line until they get the hang of it.
Limit Your Time
Experienced fishers can stay out on the water for eight hours—easily. Kids won’t have the stamina, and it’s better not to force the issue. Don’t plan for an all-day trip because that’s a surefire way to leave the little ones snoozing. Set a time limit before you set out and keep an eye on their moods. If they’re into it, you can stretch the limit a little, but you may have to cut the trip short if you see glazed-over eyes.
Dress Appropriately
Nothing screws up a pleasant trip more than too much sun and too many bugs. Come prepared with great fishing hats to block the sun, and bug spray to keep the creepy crawlies away. Packing sunscreen is never a bad idea, either!
Have a Backup Plan
You know better than anyone that a fishing trip isn’t always about catching a prize-winning fish. Sometimes it’s enough to savor the time on the water with your loved ones. First-time fishers may not have luck catching scaly specimens, so have a backup plan to make the day fun, nonetheless.
Maybe you can go for a frog hunt by the side of the pond if the fish aren’t biting (and a trip to the ice cream shop never hurts, either)!
Now that you know these tips for taking your grandkids on their first fishing trip, get excited! This is a big moment—savor the experience and have fun.
