Tragic A.T.V. Accident Claims Life of 13-Year-Old at Big Bear Creek Lake

On Saturday, June 10, 2023, at approximately 6:55 p.m., the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to an A.T.V. rollover accident at Big Bear Creek Lake, located at 9906 Big Bear Creek Rd. Responding swiftly to the distress call, a deputy, accompanied by Morgan Township Fire Department and Squad 2, promptly proceeded to the scene. The urgency of the situation warranted the request for additional support from Portsmouth Ambulance.

Upon the deputy’s arrival, he was carefully transported to the crash site by members of the Morgan Fire Department, utilizing an A.T.V. Regrettably, Kash Barnes, a 13-year-old resident of Laurelville, Ohio, was pronounced deceased at the scene by a medic from Portsmouth Ambulance.

According to an eyewitness account, the witness happened upon the crash site while riding on the nearby trails. They noticed the victim’s A.T.V. headlights shining from a slight drop-off, the vehicle resting on the individual’s body. Acting swiftly, the witness promptly sought aid and immediately dialed 9-1-1. Returning to the scene accompanied by assistance, they initiated C.P.R. efforts.

The Scioto County Coroner’s Office was promptly engaged and ordered the victim’s transfer to Montgomery County for a comprehensive autopsy examination.
