A strange and troubling scene unfolded at Greenlawn Cemetery after a pickup truck was found damaged and left behind near the mausoleum.
Just after 9 p.m., a caller reported that a blue pickup had crashed into tombstones earlier in the evening, around 6 p.m., and blown a tire. The caller said the vehicle was still sitting in the cemetery.
When Portsmouth officers arrived, they found what looked like damage to three tombstones.
The pickup had been abandoned near the mausoleum.
Police called for a tow truck and then went to the listed address of the vehicle’s owner, but officers reported that property appeared to be condemned.
With no driver on scene, the truck was towed and police took information for a report.
⚠️ MORE THAN JUST PROPERTY DAMAGE
Crashes in cemeteries hit differently.
This wasn’t a mailbox or fence post—it involved grave markers where families come to remember loved ones.
👀 WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Cases like this often involve follow-up to determine:
- Who was driving
- Whether alcohol or impairment played a role
- The cost of damage to monuments
- Possible criminal charges for leaving the scene
For now, the truck is gone.
The damage it left behind is not.
