Scioto County Sheriff’s deputies handled two separate reports involving naked people in public, including one call where neighbors said children were in the area.
Deputies were first called to the area of 15th and Custis in West Portsmouth for a report of a man in a field with his pants down.
A second caller then reported the man was naked and yelling.
According to the sheriff’s office log, several neighbors called as the situation continued. One report noted the man was “getting worse” and that there were children in the area.
Deputies found the man in the area of Haig Avenue and Calvert’s Lane.
The sheriff’s office said the man had an open warrant through SCSO, but the jail would not accept him because of medical issues.
Squad 9 was called to the scene and transported the man to Southern Ohio Medical Center, with deputies following.
Around the same time, deputies were also called to Harrison Township after a report that a woman had thrown a rock at a car on Swauger Valley Road.
The caller dropped several 911 calls and later drove out of service.
Deputies were eventually advised that the woman was naked.
According to the sheriff’s office log, deputies gathered information for criminal mischief charges. The woman was also trespassed from the property.
No names were listed here because the information provided did not show a completed arrest.
Both calls put deputies in the position of sorting out public safety, possible mental health or medical concerns, property complaints, and whether criminal charges were appropriate.
In the West Portsmouth call, neighbors were worried enough to make several calls, especially with children nearby. In the Harrison Township call, a damaged vehicle complaint turned into a report of a naked woman and a possible criminal mischief case.
Not every strange call ends in jail.
Sometimes it ends with EMS.
Sometimes it ends with a trespass warning.
And sometimes deputies spend the afternoon answering the kind of calls nobody can quite believe are real until they show up in the log.
