Vaccines Arrive in Portsmouth

Today in Portsmouth Ohio a historic event took place. The much-anticipated arrival of the COVID-19 vaccinations was received by the Portsmouth City Health Department.

According to Chris Smith, the director of the Portsmouth City Health Department, this is what arrived today.

500 doses of Moderna to be used at the discretion of the City Health Department officials. Plus, an additional 500 vaccines for the Scioto County Health Department to dispense.

According to Smith, the first to receive the vaccinations will be: medical Workers performing direct patient careEmergency Medical Servicespublic health staff conducting vaccinations, and staff working at home health care agencies working with the elderly.

The director stated that a weekly shipment containing between 250 and 750 vaccinations will arrive on a “continuous” basis.

Smith reminded our viewers to continue to wear masks and social distance as the process will take several months to be fully implemented.

According to a study by the Washington Post, “The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna shots are the first vaccines using messenger RNA technology approved for human use by the Food and Drug Administration. The approach is different from that of more traditional vaccines, which often use a weakened or dead version of a virus or a laboratory-generated protein. It uses a synthesized scrap of genetic information that is wrapped in a protective fat layer to keep it from disintegrating. When it goes into cells in the muscle of the upper arm, it contains molecular instructions that tell your cells to create a protein that triggers an immune response to the spike protein on the surface of the coronavirus. This means your immune system will be prepared to eliminate the pathogen if it tries to invade.”

SCDN will continue to cover this breaking story and update it often.
