What started as a tip from a student quickly turned into a search that uncovered more than expected.
According to a report from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, a school administrator contacted a deputy after receiving information that a student was in possession of vape devices.
During the investigation, school staff questioned a student who initially denied having anything. A second search of the student’s belongings — located in a locker — led to the discovery of two vape devices, including one identified as a THC vape.
Administrators determined the items were connected to multiple students. One of the students had reportedly been removed from class earlier in the day after appearing to be under the influence and becoming involved in a verbal altercation with a teacher.
At South Point Middle School, officials said all three students involved would face charges related to possession of marijuana paraphernalia on school grounds.
School discipline was also issued, including alternative school placements ranging from several days depending on each student’s involvement.
All items were documented, and parents or guardians were contacted before statements were collected.
The case was closed following the charges.
What began with a student speaking up ended with multiple consequences — and another reminder of how quickly situations can escalate inside school walls.
