Walmart says “No Layaway for You” 2021

The annual layaway option will not be available at Walmart this year.

Walmart customer service confirmed this information on September 21, 2021. There are no layaway options in US stores. On Walmart’s website, there is no layaway option.

Walmart used to have a layaway program from late August until mid-December. With a small deposit, customers could put items on hold and make regular payments until they were paid off. At that point, they could pick up their stuff. The products were not subject to interest charges.

Through its partnership with Affirm, the company is currently offering buyers a monthly payment option, called “buy now, pay later”.

On Walmart’s website, it’s called an “alternative to layaway” in which you can buy an item immediately and repay it over 3 to 24 months. Affirm charges a finance charge, unlike layaway. Depending on your credit score, most items will have an APR range of 10% to 30%.

Eligible categories

It was always a reasonable option to budget your holiday spending at a time when people are struggling while providing nice gifts for the family.

You must now qualify for the credit terms and then pay interest rates. For many, this is another case of predatory lending. But that assumes the individual is approved and the credit line is sufficient for their needs.
