Walmart Shoplifting Suspects Didn’t Make It Past the Parking Lot

For two suspected shoplifters, the hardest part wasn't getting merchandise into their pockets or backpacks. It was making it out of the parking lot. Lawrence County deputies handled two separate theft investigations at the South Point Walmart that ended with suspects being stopped before they could get very far. In the first case, Walmart Loss Prevention told deputies they watched a man select a box of baseball cards before concealing it down the front of his pants. According to the report, the man continued shopping and paid for the items in his cart at self-checkout but never paid for the hidden baseball cards. When deputies arrived at the Loss Prevention office, the suspect reportedly summed up the situation himself. "I'm an idiot." During a search, deputies also discovered several fishing-related items in his pockets that were still in their original packaging. The suspect claimed he had brought those items into the store with him. Loss Prevention advised deputies they would review surveillance footage to determine whether those items had also been taken from Walmart. The man was issued a theft citation ordering him to appear in Lawrence County Municipal Court. A second case unfolded while a deputy happened to be inside Walmart picking up equipment for a patrol cruiser. A Loss Prevention associate alerted the deputy to a man carrying a bright green backpack who they believed was concealing merchandise. Before surveillance footage could even be reviewed, the deputy caught up with the man near the front entrance and began a consensual conversation. According to the report, unopened merchandise could already be seen sticking out of the backpack. The man initially identified himself using someone else's name and claimed he didn't believe he had any warrants. A records check told a different story. Investigators quickly discovered the name belonged to another person. When confronted, the suspect admitted he had provided a friend's name instead of his own. Deputies then learned he had an active warrant for larceny. After placing him under arrest, deputies searched him and reportedly found even more unopened Walmart merchandise hidden in his pockets. Meanwhile, Loss Prevention reviewed surveillance footage and confirmed the suspect had allegedly concealed merchandise inside both his backpack and his clothing before attempting to leave the store. He was formally trespassed from Walmart property before being transported to the Lawrence County Jail on the outstanding warrant and a new theft charge. Big Stores Are Watching More Than You Think Retailers like Walmart rely on extensive surveillance systems and dedicated Asset Protection employees to investigate suspected shoplifting. In many cases, employees continue monitoring suspects as they move through the store rather than confronting them immediately. Once someone passes all points of sale without paying, surveillance footage, witness observations, and recovered merchandise often become key pieces of evidence. In these two cases, deputies say neither suspect made it very far beyond the checkout lanes.
