Weekend Vehicle Break-In Epidemic – Thieves Caught in the Act

We’ve reported lately on the epidemic of vehicle break-ins in Portsmouth recently. On Friday afternoon, multiple people spotted a likely suspect. 

The owners of a Robinson Avenue business said they caught a man wearing a green jumpsuit and carrying a backpack going through an employee’s vehicle around 1:15 pm. When confronted, the man flipped out and threatened employees before leaving.  

Police couldn’t locate him at the time, but about thirty minutes later a caller spotted him looking into cars in the Kroger parking lot. Once again, police could not locate the guy. 

At 7 am the next morning, a caller reported a man walking down Vinton Avenue trying car doors. He described the man as wearing a mask and a camo jacket. Officers checked the area but couldn’t find the guy. 

However at 7:25 am, a Vinton Street neighbor caught the guy in his vehicle and yelled at him. The man took off running north on High Street as officers continued to hunt for him.

At 9:30 am, a Highland Avenue caller reported someone broke into their garage. Officers took information for a report.  

Just before 3 am, a Gallia Street caller reported that someone broke into their vehicle and stole her wallet. While an officer was investigating that call, they discovered that another vehicle had been broken into as well.  

The following day, a caller reported their wallet stolen from a vehicle parked overnight on 4th Street. Police took information for a report.  

Around 11:30 pm on Sunday a caller spotted a man attempting to break into vehicles at 17th and Kendall. However, he left before officers arrived.
