Could a rural well in Scioto County be hiding secrets from decades ago? Investigators are hoping to crack not one, not two, but three long-standing missing persons cases—one dating back 40 years—after a shocking tip led them to a remote site on Pine Creek Road in South Webster.

The Organized & Major Crimes Task Force—a powerhouse unit made up of officers from the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office, Portsmouth and New Boston Police, and Pike and Lawrence County Sheriff’s Departments—descended on the scene earlier this month to excavate an old well that may have served as a makeshift grave for the missing victims.

Bad weather put the dig on hold April 2, but the crew was back at it again on April 14, with heavy machinery and high hopes.

Scioto County Sheriff David Thoroughman confirmed the task force found several items of interest, including a bullet, which have now been sent to the BCI lab to test for human remains.

“This is an active and ongoing investigation,” said the sheriff, who also gave props to the Wayne National Forest Officer, SOCF’s Special Response Team, BCI&I, Columbus Police, the County Engineer’s Office, and Bloom Township Fire & EMS for their help.

Could these new clues finally close cases that have haunted local families for generations? Only time—and the well’s dark secrets—will tell.
