A West Portsmouth caller contacted officers at 9:40 am to report some bizarre behavior.
She said a man had just left a nearby location and was now walking along Long Avenue, growling at people and acting crazy.
The man then lay down in the middle of the road. Deputies responding to the scene requested EMS personnel.
An ambulance transported the man to the hospital at 10:13 am.
