West Side 911 Call Sparks Drone Search

Scioto County deputies were called to Nile Township after dispatchers received a troubling 911 call with crying and yelling in the background. The caller kept saying “never mind” and “it’s okay,” even as dispatchers could hear the situation getting louder. A second caller then contacted 911 on the family’s behalf and said a man at the home was threatening self-harm in front of his family. Deputies were also told there were multiple guns inside the residence and several small children in the home. Deputies responded to the area and found the woman and children outside around the back of the residence. According to the sheriff’s log, deputies determined nothing physical had happened between the parties. They described it as a verbal situation. However, the man had already left the home and gone into the woods. At first, deputies were told he may have taken an extension cord with him. A squad staged nearby while deputies searched the area. Deputies requested a drone to help locate the man, and Washington Township firefighters responded with a drone. Deputies also attempted to ping the man’s phone, but his phone was turned off. During the search, deputies were told the children attended Notre Dame Elementary, and the school was notified about the situation. Deputies later learned the man did not have the extension cord when he left. It had been found. The woman told deputies the man had expressed suicidal thoughts. Deputies also tried to determine the location of firearms connected to the home, but she said she did not know where they were. According to the log, she told deputies the guns had been taken once before, but the man later got them back when she was not home and put them away somewhere. Deputies cleared from the scene and advised the caller to contact them again if the man returned while she was still there. No arrest was listed in the information provided. The call shows how quickly a domestic disturbance can become much more dangerous when threats of self-harm, children, woods, and firearms are all involved.
