“What’s in the Glove Box?” Traffic Stop Takes a Turn

A routine traffic stop got considerably more interesting when a passenger appeared reluctant to open the glove box — and a deputy wanted to know why. It ended with Trenton Wells and Makaylan Wells both cited for drug paraphernalia after deputies said the pair admitted sharing a glass pipe and using it the previous day. A Lawrence County deputy was watching traffic on U.S. 52 when he spotted a vehicle with several objects hanging from the rearview mirror, including a disability placard that appeared to obstruct the driver's view. After checking the plate, the deputy learned the registered owner did not have a valid driver's license and pulled the vehicle over. The driver, Trenton Wells, couldn't produce a license. A records check showed he did not have a valid driver's license. The deputy asked where the pair were headed. Trenton said they were going to a pawn shop in Huntington before he went to work at KFC. Makaylan, however, reportedly told the deputy they were going to get food. Then came the glove box. When the deputy asked for proof of insurance, Trenton said it was in the glove box. Makaylan initially said her mother had the insurance card but was asked to check anyway. According to the report, Makaylan turned away from the deputy, cracked the glove box open only about an inch and pulled out an envelope without opening it far enough for the deputy to see inside. The deputy asked what was in there that she didn't want him to see. She didn't answer. An additional unit was called to the scene, and the deputy asked Trenton for permission to search the vehicle. He initially declined until the owner arrived. A woman later showed up but turned out not to be the registered owner. Trenton then consented to the search. According to the deputy, the mystery of the glove box didn't last long. Inside, he said he immediately found a glass pipe containing burnt residue and material resembling Chore Boy, which he identified as paraphernalia commonly associated with illegal drug use. No other significant items were discovered during the search. After being advised of their rights, deputies said Makaylan and Trenton each acknowledged that the pipe belonged to both of them. They also allegedly told deputies they had both used it the previous day — and had already used up all the drugs. The pipe was seized as evidence. Trenton Wells and Makaylan Wells were each issued citations for drug paraphernalia and given a date to appear in Lawrence County Municipal Court. A licensed driver was called to take possession of the vehicle.
