William Shaw, 71, of Portsmouth

October 6, 1949 - May 23, 2021

William Kerr Shaw, Jr., 71, died Sunday, May 23, 2021 at SOMC Hospice with his family present.

Bill was born in Steubenville, Ohio, and spent most of his childhood in Richmond, Ohio.  He graduated from Jefferson Union High School, received a degree in political science from Ohio University, and his law degree was conferred by the John Marshall School of Law at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio.

Bill moved to Portsmouth, Ohio, setting up his law practice working with several unions in the area.  His practice diversified to other areas of law.  He worked for the Scioto County District Attorney’s office for several years and served as City Solicitor as well. Immediately prior to his retirement, Bill served as the construction facilitator for the Scioto Co. Jail.

Bill was active in supporting the Scioto County Democratic Party throughout his life. After retiring, Bill assisted in advising the Portsmouth High School Mock Trial team. He was also dabbled in community theater on occasion.

He follows his parents William Kerr Shaw, Sr. and Anna Mae Thomas Shaw in death.

Known for his acerbic wit and unyielding dedication to justice, Bill will be missed by his wife of 35 years, Susan Snedecor Shaw, whom he married June 29, 1985 in Portsmouth; his daughters, Rhachel Anne Shaw of Los Angeles, CA and Sarah Kerr Shaw of San Francisco, CA; four sisters Christine Shaw-Taylor of Las Vegas, NV, Robin K. Shaw of Hollywood, CA, Amy (J.C.) Shaw – Yevincy of St. Clairsville and Beth Anne (Sean) Shaw McGuire of Hillsborough, NC.  He will also be solely missed by niece, Jessica Taylor of Alexandria, VA; nephew, Hunter Shaw Yevincy of Dunbar, WV; dear family friends, Bruce and Becky Kalb of Portsmouth; and his many friends and colleagues in the Portsmouth Bar Association.

A Celebration of Life will be held at noon Friday at the IBEW Hall, 110 Offnere St., Portsmouth. All who attend are encouraged to come prepared to share their best “Bill Stories.” A reception will be held from 11 A.M. until the service hour. Masks will be required. A luncheon for all will be provided immediately following the service.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth.
