Woman Hands Newborn Baby to Stranger

In Ohio, the Safe Haven Law, also known as the “Baby Safe Haven Law,” allows a parent, or someone acting with the parent’s permission, to safely and legally relinquish an infant to a designated “Safe Haven” location without fear of prosecution.

Under this protection, a baby who is 30 days old or younger can be dropped off at a Safe Haven site, which includes hospitals, fire departments, or emergency medical service (EMS) stations.

Just before 6 am, a woman brought a newborn baby into the Portsmouth Fire Department with a remarkable story.

She said she was sitting on her porch and a girl she did not know just came up and handed her a baby, saying she could not take care of it.

Medics transported the baby to SOMC for medical evaluation and took a statement from the woman who received the surprise gift. Officers also contacted CPS.

The hospital reported that the child was doing well.
