I’ve got the perfect read to get you in the mood for the holiday season. If you’re the type of person who can’t wait to binge-watch Christmas love stories on the Hallmark Channel, you are going to LOVE The Snow Wife, the first book in a new series by Rebecca Regnier.
The Snow Wife is The #1 Ladies Detective Agency meets The Year Without a Santa Claus and I certainly mean that in a good way.
Midlife Magic and Romance
Regnier is a pioneer in the paranormal women’s fiction genre, which mixes middle age and magic. Her popular Widow’s Bay series takes place in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This new series, North of Forty-Nine, goes even farther north to Alaska. Southern widow, Bonnie Virtue, takes a dream cruise to the Land of the Midnight Sun and ends up meeting a handsome, rugged stranger when the ship runs into trouble at a remote (and magical) island community.
Not too surprisingly, she encounters colorful locals, a mystery to solve, and a wealthy sliver fox who could be her second chance at love. (Did I mention he owns a toy company?)
Like the delightfully gentle #1 Ladies Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith, this book mystery is murder-free and the romance is PG-rated.
Holiday Humor
What really sets this book apart is award-winning humor columnist Rebecca Regnier’s wit. There’s an early 1990s pop music reference that actually made me do a spit take. The humor is clean.
Regnier says her work is inspired by the idea of what would happen if you got your magical powers in mid-life when you have the wisdom to put them to good use instead of when you’re 11 like in the Harry Potter books. Bonnie Virtue’s discovery of her own particular brand of magic is especially delightful because of the Christmas elements. I don’t want to give too much of that away and spoil the book, but trust me. If you love a good Hallmark Christmas romance movie, you’ll get a kick out of this book.
