Scioto County Commissioners approved hiring three new corrections officers for the Scioto County Jail at Thursday’s Commissioners’ meeting.
Despite the cost of salaries, Commissioner Scottie Powell said the move will actually save the county $50,000 by eliminating overtime costs.
Powell said, “We appreciate Sheriff Thoroughman and all the work they do, not only at the jail but, of course, out in the county as well.”
This spirit of cooperation is a marked improvement between the commissioners’ often tense relationship with former Scioto County Sheriff Marty Donnini.
Commissioner Bryan Davis said this move would allow the jail to make more efficient checks on prisoners and be in compliance with state regulations. He said extra personnel would also fight burnout. “When you have corrections officers who are on overtime, all the time, they are getting burned out. That’s not healthy.” He said the jail had housed over 200 inmates for some time and that corrections officers were exhausted.
The commissioners voted unanimously to approve the funding for hiring.
