Ring doorbell employees fired for spying
Amazon’s admission that four employees of the company’s Ring Doorbell division were fired for violating customer privacy has launched a whole lot of articles and news stories that make it sound as if teams of Ring employees are constantly monitoring your every move. And while four employees in the past four years have been fired from the company for overstepping their bounds, it’s not quite as bad the headlines make it sound.
The Ring video doorbell allows you to see who’s at your door rather you’re at home or a thousand miles away simply by using a smartphone app. It also records video whenever someone is at your door. Ring videos have become important tools for identifying package thefts and for helping police with other crimes.
In response to a letter from U.S. Senators about privacy concerns, Amazon admitted that four employees in the past four years had been fired for violating customer privacy.
The company said that the number of people who have access to a customer video feed is limited and that no employee has unrestricted access.
Employees cannot access a customer’s video feed without permission from the customer, usually for some type of troubleshooting.
Amazon says it also reviews employee access to customer data periodically to watch for any inappropriate access on the part of employees.
