Ironton woman shot by Portsmouth Police during Greenup Co. chase
An Ironton woman was injured after police say someone in her vehicle opened fire on pursuing officers during a chase just after 1 am on Wednesday morning.
According to police reports, the case started when the Ohio Highway Patrol attempted to pull Amanda Ann Cochran, 31, of Ironton, over on US 23 in Scioto County for a traffic stop. Police say her license plate was obstructed and illegible. Cochran fled the scene and OHP followed. At that time, shots were fired from her vehicle.
Portsmouth officers joined in the chase. About the time the vehicle crossed into Kentucky on US23, shots were again fired, this time at PPD officers. PPD returned fire and hit the driver. Portsmouth Police were able to end the chase by performing a legal intervention maneuver to stop the vehicle. The driver and passenger were taken into custody.
Cochran has active warrants in both Ohio and Kentucky. She was airlifted from the scene to St. Mary’s Medical Center. Her injuries are non-life threatening. Passenger, John Clifton Thomas Knotts, 34, of Pedro, Ohio is being held at the Greenup County Detention Center. He is charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun, possession of meth, trafficking heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia.
