The Scioto County Commissioners are excited about the possibilities for water trails in the county and they say the county’s access point to the Scioto River should be finished within 90 days.
Commissioner Scottie Powell said the access point for the new kayaking and canoe ramp is located off Old Bridge Road across from the Briar Patch.
“We’ve signed the contracts; we’ve awarded the bids. The contractor has 90 days to complete the project. They should be starting soon.”
In addition to the county’s access point, Arc of Appalachia will have an access point at Rush Township, and Portsmouth will have one at Alexandria Point.
“Hopefully,” Powell said. “We can launch all of those at one time and have an event to kick off the first time having water access to the Scioto River in our county.”
The commissioner said it is all part of a bigger plan to go to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and have it all designated as a water trail.
Powell said there had been several inquiries about the access points, and the area could possibly see a water taxi service or watercraft rental businesses. “We’ll likely see some kind of industry pop up. Our job is to put the infrastructure in place.”
