Statewide Tornado Drill in Kentucky Wednesday
If you hear tornado sirens sounding today in Kentucky, don’t be scared. There’s a statewide tornado drill scheduled at 10:07 am. March 1 – 7 is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Kentucky, a timely reminder after the deadly tornado that struck the Nashville, Tennessee area.
Greenup County E-911 reminds residents that this week is the eighth anniversary of the tornadoes that struck East Bernstadt, Salyersville, and West Liberty taking 26 lives.
“Severe weather knows no boundaries and impacts every individual in every region of the Commonwealth. Because of this, you need to BE AWARE – BE PREPARED – HAVE A PLAN!”
The drill ve conducted in cooperation with the National Weather Service, Kentucky Emergency Management, Kentucky Weather Preparedness Committee, and the Kentucky Broadcasters Association.
In addition to tornado sirens, weather alert radios will activate and TV and radio stations will carry the alert. If the weather is actually threatening, the drill will be postponed to the 5th.
“Severe Weather Awareness Week is a great time to review your emergency plans at home, at work, and at school,” said Ed Ray, Meteorologist-in-Charge at the National Weather Service in Jackson, KY.
Suggestions include purchasing an NOAA weather radio to use in case cell coverage is disrupted and putting together an emergency kit with battery-powered lights, water, and other essentials in case there’s a long-term power disruption. Battery-powered lights are better than candles because of the fire danger. Also include first-aid supplies, non-perishable foods, and a wrench in case you need to turn off utilities.
