Officers Show Compassion and Care for Those in Need
When the community calls for help, Portsmouth’s finest are always ready to respond. In two separate incidents this week, officers showcased not only their dedication but their compassion for those in need.
The first call came from concerned citizens on 2nd Street, reporting an elderly man struggling to move with a walker and a cast on his foot. Worried for his well-being, they requested assistance. Officers arrived to find the man sitting calmly on a bench. Despite his challenges, he assured the officers he was simply taking a break during his walk to Fork n Finger for lunch.
Though he seemed fine, one officer offered a ride, but the man politely declined, stating he wanted to get used to using his walker on his own. It was a simple, but touching moment of independence, and the officers left knowing they had provided the help and care needed.
Next, a call came from 7th Street about a woman lying unconscious on the sidewalk. Officers responded quickly, and upon arriving, they found her unresponsive. One officer immediately took action, rousing her from unconsciousness.
The woman explained she suffered from heart problems, which had caused her to faint. Despite this, she declined medical treatment and insisted on returning to her home. Officers respected her wishes and ensured she was safely inside before leaving the scene.
These two incidents are just another example of the Portsmouth Police’s commitment to keeping the community safe—and to showing up when someone’s in need, no matter how big or small the situation may seem.
