Ohio’s report cards for school districts are out and several districts in the county failed to make the grade. Let’s break down which districts are struggling and which ones are thriving. The state grades on a 5-star rating system, with 3 stars indicating the district meets minimum state standards.
2-Stars
Sciotoville Community School received only 2 out of 5 stars after scoring only 1 star for gap closing and early literacy. Academic achievement and progress were ranked at 2 out of 5 stars. The one bright spot was a 3 out of 5 rating for graduation rates.
2.5 Stars
The state ranked Portsmouth City Schools 2.5 out of 5 stars. The state said the district fell short in matching state standards, meeting student growth expectations, and closing gaps. Plus, the district lagged way behind in early literacy, receiving only 1 out of 5 stars.
Portsmouth schools did stand out in their graduation rate with 4 out of 5 stars thanks to a nearly 95% graduation rate.
Scioto County Career & Technical Center also got a 2.5, thanks to hitting only 2 out of 5 for academic achievement. However, it received four stars for career readiness and student and student graduation, as well as 5 stars for its nearly 99% graduation rate.
3 Stars
Washington Nile Schools were ranked 3 out of 5 stars. Academic achievement, early literacy, and progress received only 2 out 5 stars. However, gap closing and graduation were ranked 3 out of 5.
Minford Schools ranked 3 out of 5 stars. While the graduation rate earned 5 stars, the district got only 2 stars for progress and gap closing and 3 out of 5 for achievement.
4 Stars
The state rated New Boston Schools 4 out of 5 possible stars. The district scored 3 out of 5 stars for achievement and gap closing as well as 5 out of 5 stars for progress.
The early literacy rate is 3 out of 5 stars, and the graduation rate is 4 out of 5 stars for a 94.4% graduation rate.
Wheelersburg School also received a 4 out of 5 stars. The state awarded 4 out of 5 stars for progress, gap closing, and graduations rates along with three stars for academic achievement.
4.5 Stars
Bloom Vernon Schools received a 4.5 ranking, exceeding state expectations with 4 out 5 stars for academic achievement, early literacy, and progress. Plus 5 out of 5 stars for gap closing and a nearly 97% graduation rate.
Green Local Schools also ranked 4.5 out of 5. It scored 5 stars for progress along with 3 out of 5 stars for achievement. The state awarded 4 out of 5 stars for gap closing, graduation rates, and early literacy.
Northwest Schools also ranked 4.5 out of a possible 5. The school received 5 out of 5 stars for graduation and progress along with 4 out of 5 stars for early literacy and gap closing. Academic achievement was rated at 3 out of 5 stars.
Valley Schools earned 4.5 out of 5 stars, with 5-star rankings for progress and gap closing. The school earned 3 stars for early literacy and 4 stars for academic achievement.
