A single-vehicle accident on Christmas Day has left a community grieving during what should have been a time of joy. Around 1:45 p.m., a 2007 Saturn Ion veered off the road, struck a guardrail, and plunged into a creek. The driver, a 73-year-old woman, was pronounced deceased after being transported to a local medical center.
The accident occurred on State Route 349, near Lake Alma State Park, within the city of Wellston. The victim, identified as Leona Claar, was a longtime resident. Emergency responders, including the local fire department, sheriff’s office, and EMS, worked together to recover the vehicle and investigate the scene.
State Route 349 was closed for three hours as authorities conducted their investigation. The cause of the accident is still under review. This tragedy is a stark reminder of the importance of caution on roadways, particularly during the holiday season.
As the community reflects on this loss, the collaborative response from emergency services highlights the strength and compassion of Wellston. Residents are reminded to stay vigilant and cautious, particularly on familiar roads, as even small lapses can lead to devastating consequences.
