The State Fire Marshal’s Office and the coroner are investigating a fatal fire that claimed the life of a 42-year-old man.
Deputies were dispatched to a trailer fire just off County Road 22 in Lawrence County. The trailer had been abandoned for some time and was considered unlivable.
However, firefighters discovered a body inside after they extinguished the flames. Neighbors said the trailer had been there for years and recently people had stripped it for metal.
The fire marshal took photos at the scene and the body was moved to a local funeral home to hold. Investigators took pictures of the body and observed surgical hardware that might help them identify the deceased.
The coroner’s office took possession of the deceased and the body was sent to Montgomery County for forensic examination.
The medical examiner eventually identified the victim as Randy Newcomb, 42. The surgical hardware helped confirm his identity.
The fire remains under investigation, though at this time investigators do not suspect foul play.
