Commissioner Cathy Coleman said that one word was on her mind when she voted in favor of a Second Amendment Sanctuary resolution, “tyranny.”
On Thursday, Scioto County joined many communities across the country in passing resolutions declaring their intention not to enforce any laws that the community believes contradicts the Constitutional right to keep and bear arms.
Coleman said the Second Amendment was originally passed with an eye to protecting the public from tyrannical governments, she gave careful thought as to the importance of an unrestricted right to keep and bear arms in the 21st century.
“You never know when things will change. When you think of past dictators, the first thing they do before genocide is take away your weapons.”
Coleman said she thought long and hard about the decision.
“Just this morning we said the Pledge of Allegiance, at the very end it says, ‘liberty and justice for all.’ These are the things I think about whenever I’m making decisions. I support this because I do not want my arms to be taken away from me or any of you.”
“But we have to go back to the reason I believe the Second Amendment was written — to protect us from tyrannical governments. I wholly support being a sanctuary county.”
