On Thursday, April 16th, 2020, former Beavercreek police officer Kevin Kovacs was arrested for “producing, distributing, receiving, transporting and possessing child pornography” (Attorney David DeVillers). Officer Kovacs worked as a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) officer, meaning he was in close contact with children.
Kovacs worked as a Beavercreek police officer for almost twenty-six years and retired in 2018. The court records indicate that the crimes he committed occurred between March of 2015 and December of 2019, meaning he was still employed as a police officer.
In addition, Kovacs work as a D.A.R.E. officer began in 2012 and did not conclude until his retirement in 2018, meaning he had easy and frequent access to children to commit his heinous acts of child pornography.
I spoke directly with the FBI this afternoon about this case. Kovacs is also being charged with tampering a witness or informant. Students and parents that Kovacs worked with have been notified of the situation and have been encouraged to speak out about any possible transgressions they witnessed.
On the Beavercreek Police Department’s Facebook page, regarding the D.A.R.E. program, this statement can be found regarding D.A.R.E. officers:
“By employing law enforcement officers to teach the curriculum, D.A.R.E. brings the firsthand accounts of the officers’…helps to foster a positive relationship between the students and police officers.”
The actions performed by Officer Kovacs will certainly have a negative impact on Beavercreek’s D.A.R.E. program in the future.
