Good Boy Sniffs Out Drugs, Gun During Early Morning Traffic Stop

k9 busts drugs

What started as a routine early morning traffic stop turned into a major bust—thanks to one very good boy.

Pike County Sheriff Tracy D. Evans says it all unfolded around 4:35 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, when Pike County Deputy Gullett and his K9 partner, Rex, were called in to assist the Ohio State Highway Patrol during a stop involving a white Ford F-150.

The occupants told officers they were traveling from Michigan to Myrtle Beach—but that story quickly took a back seat once Rex got to work.

Deputy Gullett deployed K9 Rex for a free-air sniff around the vehicle, and the trained K9 gave a positive alert—indicating the presence of narcotics.

That alert led to a full search of the truck.

What deputies found inside was anything but minor.

Authorities say the search turned up:

The discovery highlights the critical role K9 units play in law enforcement, especially during roadside stops where illegal drugs and weapons can otherwise go undetected.

No additional details about charges or arrests were immediately released, but the investigation remains ongoing.

And as for Rex?

Safe to say—he earned his treats that morning.
