A Green Township resident contacted the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office to report that they had been fooled by a scam.
They said a caller had contacted them pretending to be from Publisher’s Clearinghouse. They sent $500 to the scammer before realizing it was a fake.
Scammers often use the promise of contest winnings as a way to trick people into giving away personal information, or even money.
One red flag to watch out for is if the contest requires you to pay them a fee. Legitimate contests and sweepstakes should never ask for payment.
Another warning sign is if the contest seems too good to be true. If the prize seems too extravagant or the odds of winning are too high, it’s likely a scam. Be wary of contests that require you to provide sensitive information, such as your social security number or bank account information. A legitimate contest will only require basic contact information, such as your name and email address.
