In Ohio, a Republican bill bans vaccination requirements
A GOP bill pending in the Ohio House would prevent employers from requiring employees to receive vaccinations. Additionally, workers couldn’t be fired for refusing to comply.
The Republican-led Ohio House Health Committee is considering a bill that addresses mandatory requirements for all vaccines, like flu shots.
“Not all Ohioans can or want to receive vaccines,” Rep. Jennifer Gross of West Chester, Ohio, said.
Despite being a nurse practitioner, Gross has not received the COVID-19 vaccination.
COVID-19 is not mentioned in the legislation. Yet, Gross mentioned several instances in which employers, including hospitals, required COVID-19 vaccination proof as a condition of employment.
Furthermore, schools are required to provide parents with more information about exemptions they can request from vaccines. The bill also repeals a state law requiring college students to disclose whether they’ve had vaccinations against meningococcal meningitis and hepatitis B.
Several opponents of the bill testified before the Health Committee on Tuesday.
Dr. John Crow of Akron’s Children Hospital told lawmakers the decision was “like playing Russian roulette.”.
Ohio’s bill, however, is more expansive in terms of covering a broader range of vaccines than COVID-19.
