Lawrence County Commissioners to go “out and about”

A new year means changes for the Lawrence County Commissioners, starting with appointing a new president at their first regular meeting of 2020.

Current President Freddie Hayes, Jr. started the meeting by saying, “Gonna let somebody else do it this year.”

He continued “I think it’s a good deal to let everyone have their turn. But I had a good time. I’m gonna have to give up my middle seat, here.” He then made a motion to appoint Commissioner DeAnna Holliday as Commission President.

Commissioner Colton Copley jokingly asked if Hayes was sure he didn’t want to do it again before seconding the motion.

Hayes and Holliday then switched seats at the meeting table.

Holliday said it was going to take some time to get used to her new place at the table and thanked her fellow commissioners for their support. “I appreciate the opportunity. I know I have some big shoes to fill following Commissioner Pratt and Commissioner Hayes. They both served so well. I look forward to leading in a good positive direction.”

The commissioners then unanimously voted for Colton Copley to serve as vice president. Holliday said meetings would continue to be live-streamed on Facebook to provide transparency and accessibility to the community.

She also added that the commissioners planned to hold meetings at various locations around the county to make sure citizens had a chance to attend. “We’re going to start the new year out and about.

The first of the off-site meetings will be held Wednesday, January 15 at Proctor’s Landing in Proctorville.

Holliday also expressed optimism for the year ahead.

“We have a lot of bright things ahead. A lot of good things.”
