Portsmouth Police Officers responding to a report of a possible deceased person under a bridge launched an investigation to see what was really going on and discovered a shocking hoax perpetrated on a worried mother. Even worse, was the person behind the hoax.
Just after 10 p.m., a mom asked officers to perform a welfare check on her son. She received a message that a body had been discovered under a bridge with a tattoo matching her son’s.
She had called around to local law enforcement agencies and learned there was no report of a body, but asked officers to check on her son.
The man was not home, but officers were able to ping his phone and catch up with him. He said he did not want to harm himself and had nothing to do with sending the messages.
However, he allowed officers to look at his phone, and they discovered he was involved with the message. They advised him that it’s illegal to make false reports like that. Police then contacted the mother to let her know what was going on.
